What is SEO for business?

My name’s Chris Nicholaidis, I’m the lead consultant here at AMSEO, an I’m going to quickly cover the basics of Search Engine Optimisation for you so we’re on the same playing field as things are discussed further.

SEO is essentially a very simple concept to grasp. It’s sole aim is to make search engines love your website in order to make it rank higher when people search for certain keyword terms. Sounds simple eh? The concept is simple but our enemies- the search engines are far from simple! I will leave the mumbo jumbo for now and let you read more on why you should invest in SEO for Business

Why invest in SEO for Business?

SEO for Business to increase salesThe aim of any company is bring in more customers, for the least investment to create the best profit…correct? What is the cheapest way bringing in new customers? Pay a salesman, get him a nice car? No!!! Your website is the cheapest and easiest way of bringing in new business!

Right now you either have no website or have a website that is doing nothing but look pretty. What is the point in that? Most likely you’re a small business so you don’t need to market your brand, what you need is a ‘silent sales partner’ that works 24 hours a day for little or no reward.

The only way to make this possible is by investing a little in SEO for Business. You have to shake the concepts you have been told in the past about your website and relearn that websites nowadays are a 100% a necessity for any business. They are no longer an optional extra, research now shows that if you don’t have a website then potential customers ARE going to go elsewhere.

We are not saying every company needs a huge website with all the whistles blowing but they must have some form of web presence so potential customers can read more about their services. But how are they going to read more if they can’t find the website to start with?
How does SEO for Business actually work?

Back to me, Chris again. Search Engine Optimisation has 2 basic sides. Onsite Optimisation and Offsite Optimisation…not too hard to follow so far I hope.

First of all I will cover the general idea of Onsite Search Engine Optimisation.

SEO for small businessesHow does a search engine know what your website is about? Google and all other search engines actively search your website pages looking for words and patterns They look for words that appear more often than others, words that appear in images (the code behind the picture), they look for words in your page titles and a whole lot of other places. It takes all of these words it finds and compares them to the number of words you have, the location of the words etc. This is all indexed together, compared with all the other websites that contain similar terms and then google spits out it’s search results.

Trust me when I say that NO ONE knows the exact number of things that google compares on your website, as SEO consultants it’s our job to figure out what it’s looking for and change a client’s website accordingly to ensure you continue to rank highly. In a nutshell, thats how onsite optimisation works, there’s alot more that must be done in the background but that’s the basic concept.
and now…Offsite Search Engine Optimisation

SEO for Business to increase Page RankNothing hard to understand here either. If you’re looking to buy something you always go and ask someone for advice, when a politician (sorry) gets elected, they count the number of votes…yes? That’s how search engines do things as well. Obvioulsy they don’t pick up the phone and call a friend or look in the ballot box for votes, instead they use what they know, websites. These votes take the form of of backlinks. You all now what a link is, you click on enough of them. Backlinks are links but seen from the recieving end.

Search Engines count these backlinks as votes for your website and so the more backlinks the more they rank your site. It doesn’t stop there though, would you trust an experts view over an amateur? Same as the search engines. IF your backlink is on a site with relevant content to yours then they treat that website as an expert so the backlink is worth more.

It goes into even more detail when we look at the text in the backlink also known as anchor text. This is a link where you see specific words instead of a website address. IF I went out and put a backlink somewhere to this site saying ‘buy tomoatoes’, it wouldn’t be very relevant would it? The search engines know this. If I put a backlink on the same site saying ‘SEO for Business’ the google can see the words, see the relevance on my website and thus rates that link alot higher.

Since the Social Media revolution (Facebook, myspace etc), Social Media has now fallen into the category of Offsite Optimisation. For small companies though it’s not something you really need to concern yourselves with for now but should look at in the future.
Is SEO for business really worth it?

YES! Your site rank is so important to your bottom line. Look at the diagram to see a breakdown of visitors by percentage! As you can plainly see, if you’re no 1, you get 42.1% of all search traffic as visitors…42.1%!!!!!! And if you aren’t on page 1 or 2 of the search then you might as well pull the plug on your website.

SEO for Business

Is it worth investing in SEO for Business? You bet it is!! Remember that search traffic is totally free (apart from your SEO for Business investment) but lets face facts here, a single new contract usually covers the costs of any SEO tenfold. Remember- you have to speculate to accumulate!
